Thanks to everyone who turned up and made the day such a lot of fun. It was great to see old friends and meet new ones too. My profuse apologies to Notts for whacking his nose with a french stick :)

Lots of people are asking when the next one will be ... so please stick Saturday 14th August in your diaries.

We could either go to the same place (Wharncliffe Woods, North Sheffield - go to www.forestry.gov.uk and type wharncliffe woods into the search box) or a different venue, possibly the Yorkshire Scultpure Park (www.ysp.co.uk)

Pros and cons ...
The woods are vast, some nice walks and lovely scenery, fairly quiet so plenty of opportunity for those who want to indulge in a spot of al fresco play. The downside is that there are no toilets, though there are several pubs in the village half a mile away from the woods carpark. Pubs would be used as a contingency pan in the event of rain.

The scultpure park (just off J38 of the M1 - even Manc could find it :) ) has a cafe/restaurant in the visitor centre, and there are also gift shops and galleries and toilets. There is a picnic area too, and you can walk round the park and see all the weird and wonderful outdoor sculptures. There is an area of woodland on one side of the park that could provide opportunities for some discreet play, but the downside is that there will be more people around.

So - any preferences please?

Whooops - I just noticed Sat 14th August clashes with roddys birthday party, and I don't want to hijack that - so pencil in the Saturday after - 21st August.

sculpture park for me.

and you don't mention the 2 miles to get back to the car park, before driving to the pub for a pee.

is there not a suitable area not so far from the car park??

flopsybunny
06-06-2004, 13:23
Yes, BFU, there are other possibilities in the woods that dont involve such a long walk.

Saturday 21st August sounds all right for me, although I'll probably need somebody to give me a lift to either venue.

I may not know much about art, but I know what I don't like.
Just a hunch, but I guess this scultpure park might contain scultpure. A waste of taxpayers money if ever there was.

Not outdoor people are we. Whats wrong with u all, Friday was great, fresh air, a lovely walk and lots of privacy.

Should have spent the week with the chillies at home and not getting a minutes peace, u would appreciate the quietness of the woods.

So what if u couldnt use the loo and a bush had to do. Surely that adds to the fun of the great outdoors.

Good job i havent mentioned a camping weekend.

All have to bring your zimmers next time. To help with the walking.

Glad u are arranging another one. Last one was great.

All things considered, I prefer the woods to the sculpture park. Am happy to check out a different location in the woods for the picnic spot, off the beaten track, but not such a long walk as before.

However, if I'm never heard of again, I'll have got lost, so send out a search party!

You want a secluded spot where you won't be disturbed, which is why you don't want to be too close to the car park. I quite liked the spot you picked, it really isn't your fault that the waterfall was out of order. The Forestry Commission are to blame for neglecting to maintain the supply to it. And it wasn't very from the car park at all, and I would quite happily have gone twice as far.

Sadly much as I would love to come to either place I am devastated that I won't be able to make it, as annual hols in the sun will just about be starting then. I know that you will all enjoy it without me have a ball :bighug

Sorry to hear you can't make it Thomas -- your cheery presence will be missed! Hopefully, however, those who enjoyed it last time will be joined by others to sample the delights of Wharncliffe Woods on the 21st!

As this event is getting close now, and as ive noticed many new members from the more Northern areas of the country recently, thought id pull it to the top again. It was great last time so if you can make it do come along .

Is there anyone who can give me a lift to the picnic, either from the Nottingham area or Sheffield railway station - without a car it is not easy to get to the site.

Pleased to see the picnics munching doing well. Sorry I cant make many but the demands of work in the week and family life at weekends do make it very difficult for me. I am however looking foward to Jeanie's party this week, so life isn't all bad!!

Ok folks ... I suggest we meet at 13.00 in the carpark of Wharncliffe Woods, North Sheffield - for a location map go to www.forestry.gov.uk, and type Wharncliffe woods into the search box.

We have a different picnic location this time - its less than 10 mins walk from the car park.

As before, please bring food and drink and something to sit on. We can follow through around 5-6 ish by visiting a local pub where hot food is available to anyone who wants it.

There probably won't be as many takers this time round because of holidays ... nevertheless, will look forward to seeing whoever decides to turn up. The more the merrier!

Twist - its not the squirrels you have to watch out for, but flopsy's cousins.

I hope there's a standby plan in case it rains all day.

I hope all the tomatos were picked up before you left!

I think we will be looking for tomato plants as well as an earring next time Firmfather.

A very pleasant afternoon, and great to see you and other site regulars I haven't seen before. Didn't know the woods were so vast, or so easy to get lost - I was following behind the others to test them to see if they could find their way back to the car park and noticed them take some wrong turnings ;)

but Smartarse lived up to his name :cool2: and he led the way back :)

Thanks flopsy for arranging another very pleasant day out, and to Therapist for providing seating in what was a rather damp woods. Pity we didn't find your earring though flops.

And sorry about all those tomatoes everybody.

Thanks to all for turning up; I really have to say
I had a lot of whacky fun and so enjoyed the day
But what I really didn’t like were spiders round and fat
They came capering on my blanket right next to where I sat
I jumped about and squealed and squealed but no-one came to help
Instead the cheeky blighters with tomatoes they did pelt!
I could not sit defenceless, I could not sit and sob
So I grabbed some ammunition and tomatoes I did lob!
:wink

Good time had by all !

deep on the woods where nobody goes
went the bss folk baring tomatoes
Who threw the first one nobody knows
But Id not be shocked if a little plant grows.

May be next year if we all go backs
A tree'll be there riv'ling Beany Jacks ,
On top Miss Muffets spider may well lurk inside,
But best not tell Flopsy cos she'll run and hide.

thanks to all who made the day so enjoysble.. hope to see uyou all at the next. Thanks specially to Flops for organising hugssssssssssssssss jox
